Information for international visitors arriving or departing by air

Milton Keynes is the perfect destination for international visitors planning on exploring Britain. The central location means visitors can access all of the major UK cities, including those involved in the 2012 Olympic games. Milton Keynes is a perfect distance from London and within easy access of all of the London airports:

•    London Heathrow Airport is less than 55 miles from Milton Keynes,
•    London Luton Airport is only 25 miles from Milton Keynes,
•    London Gatwick Airport is about 90 miles from Milton Keynes,
•    London Stansted Airport is about 73 miles from Milton Keynes.

London Heathrow Airport
Heathrow Airport is one of the busiest international airports in the world. With over 90 airlines flying to over 180 destinations worldwide visitors to Milton Keynes are sure to find a reasonably priced flight to suit them. The easiest form of transport to Milton Keynes from Heathrow Airport would be to hire a car - http://www.heathrow-airport-guide.co.uk/car-hire.html. There are eight car hire providers located at Heathrow Airport offering highly competitive prices. Hiring a car while in the UK will make international visitors more mobile and provide an opportunity to view the rest of the UK in all its beauty.

An alternative form of transport for visitors to Milton Keynes would be a National Express Coach. National Express provides a fast coach directly from Heathrow Airport to Milton Keynes which takes only 1 hour 5 minutes.

There are five terminals at Heathrow (although Terminal 2 is closed for refurbishment until 2014), so visitors must know in advance which terminal they will be arriving at and departing from in order to plan their transport.

London Luton Airport
Although Luton Airport is not the largest airport in the UK, it still deals with over 9 million passengers each year.  Luton Airport is the nearest and most accessible airport to Milton Keynes.  A National Express Coach takes less than 50 minutes and prices start from £8.50. Luton Airport provides flights to both UK and worldwide destinations.  The majority of flights are provided by low cost airlines.  Therefore Luton Airport is the nearest and probably the cheapest option for international visitors planning on travelling to Milton Keynes - http://www.luton-airport-guide.co.uk/transport.html.

London Stansted Airport
With over 19 million passengers each year Stansted Airport is the UK’s third busiest airport - http://www.stansted-airport-guide.co.uk/transport.html. Therefore it would be if best visitors have a plan of how they are going to get to and from the airport to avoid possible congestion when they arrive or depart. Although Stansted airport is not as near to Milton Keynes as Heathrow or Luton airport, a large number of low cost airlines fly to and from it. Therefore visitors may find they save money by using it.

Car hire from Stansted would be visitors’ most direct form of transport from the airport. However, this may not be the quickest mode of transport to Milton Keynes because of the amount of traffic on the M25, which is the easiest and most direct route. Alternatively visitors could use a National Express coach which runs directly to Milton Keynes. However, this may also involve time spent in heavy traffic. Should passengers choose to catch the train to Milton Keynes they will have to change at London Euston.

London Gatwick Airport
Gatwick Airport is the furthest airport from Milton Keynes but the second largest airport in the UK.  It boasts the busiest single runway in the whole world and has departures to more destinations than any other UK airport.  Therefore visitors may only be able to arrive at Gatwick Airport.  Although Gatwick is the furthest airport from Milton Keynes it is still less than 100 miles away and easy to drive to if visitors wish to hire a car.  Other options include the National Express Coach, train or taxi - http://www.gatwick-airport-guide.co.uk/transport.html

Security
All UK airports have high security and when leaving the UK visitors should be aware of the security restrictions in place. All hand luggage will be scanned and visitors may be asked to remove any electrical items to be scanned separately from hand luggage.  Laptops must be removed from bags or cases and scanned separately. Some airports in the UK have introduced body scanners to screen passengers for illegal goods or substances. Visitors may be selected at random to go through the body scanner.

London airports can be exceptionally busy, especially during peak travel periods. Therefore Destination Milton Keynes recommends international visitors arrive at the airport in plenty of time to get through the airport security.

All liquids in hand luggage must be under 100 ml and placed in a clear plastic bag. Any products considered as weapons are banned and will be confiscated, this includes toy or replica guns.

Hand Luggage restrictions

Most airlines will only allow one piece of hand luggage per passenger and implement a size restriction on the size of the hand luggage.  To discover the restrictions in place for an airline, visitors should check their airline website or contact the airline directly.
