“An athlete is not born as a champion, he becomes it even without winning. The desire to arrive, achieve goals, overcome them and create new ones to overcome transforms an athlete to a champion. You're a great lover of sailing, a sport you practice at the highest level since you will be participating to the next London Olympic Games. How triathlon fits in your physical and mental preparation for a so important challenge?
First, for good luck, don’t talk about London 2012! Trials will begin on March 2011, I have very good chances being the number one in the Italian ranking... but you never know! I compete on a boat where the physical preparation is essential so the triathlon is an excellent dry preparation. Sailing in general is a sport that from a mental point of view absorbs you many energies, spending hours after hours in the sea waiting for the wind or racing at the highest levels while other people stay willingly under the covers are factors that modify your approach to all situations in life. Triathlon fits perfectly in this life: hard work, dedication, fun!

How have you approached triathlon and what distances you have you experienced?
I approached triathlon since I cycle, run and.. float…swim is a buzzword yet! In the world of sailing bike is a second sport for everyone: shoes, helmet, bike and then way down to release the fatigue and nerves of a day in the sea! Except for one Sprint and one Olympic distance races I did a couple of years ago, this is my first experience on such a long distance!
Why did you choose the TriStar222 in Sardinia and what you expect from this new race?
I chose TriStar222 both for the suitable schedule, since I have almost finished the sailing season, and for especially for the challenge it represents. 2km swim, 200km cycle and 20km run are not a “walk” and it takes dedication and madness to get ready. When I talk about the race with people, they look at me as if I were an alien, but then I see in their eyes that they believe in me a bit! Besides, the beautiful location has also enticed 4 my "colleagues" sailors to accompany me and create a fan club, supporting and giving the energy not to “do a fool"! Objective: cross the finish line….within time limit!
In your opinion which are the characteristic that an athlete must have to meet ambitious targets?
An athlete is not born as a champion, he becomes it even without winning. The desire to arrive, achieve goals, overcome them and create new ones to overcome transforms an athlete to a champion. We’re all champions, each of us has found an area of life where you do are a champion, in which you are valued and respected. Perseverance and desire to grow are all to an athlete for achieving ambitious goals, for someone is to break a record and for another is to finish the race.
