The successful international triathlon will be held on 15 April, for the second time in Portocolom. The 2011 edition has been one of the best rated races by the triathletes.
On 15 April, Portocolom will again become the scenario of the early start of the summer for the European triathlon. The second edition comes after the huge success of 2011 which brought to Mallorca some of the best pro triathletes in the world and was highly appreciated by the participants. The TriStar55.5 and TriStar111 races will be accompanied by new alternative activities (race for children, Training Camps...) and the top ranked TriStar111 finishers will share a 10,000€ PRO cash purse.
In its first year, TriStar Mallorca has right away become one of the favorite destinations for the fans of the TriStar formats, as well as one of the most highly valued experiences of last year’s participants. This great success was undoubtedly brought about by the authentic beauty of the region, the demanding course with a double ascent to Sant Salvador, the tranquil charm of the seaside resort of Portocolom in Felanitx, the position in the international triathlon calendar (one of the earliest races in Europe) and the amazing 2011 start list with some of the best top-class triathletes: Chris 'Macca' McCormack, Normann Stadler, Olivier Marceau and Marcel Zamora leading the impressive group of professionals.
In 2012, a series of new features will be introduced to the TriStar Mallorca races. These are designed to help the event to grow both locally and internationally. Looking at the current state of registrations, with over 200 athletes registered for the race so far, the number of participants from last year (350 athletes) might be more than doubled in 2012. One of the new features, introduced in 2012 will be a series of Training Camps with international pro triathletes. Some of them have already been announced and there are others, coming up soon, scheduled for April 2012. The camps are ideal for amateur and professional triathletes from Central Europe looking for a good time to prepare for the new season. To make TriStar Mallorca an experience for the whole family, a duathlon for children will be held on Saturday. Other activities in the Star&Co Expo, located in the finish area in the pleasant Yacht Club of Portocolom, will complement the race and contribute to its cheerful ambiance. With a 10,000€ PRO cash purse distributed among the top ranked athletes (shared according to the ITU rules) , a high number of professionals ready to compete for the highest positions is expected to be seen in TriStar111 Mallorca.
Team Sauerland and TriStar offer a high quality training camp (TriStar Training Camp) in the perfect destination to start summer early. One week or two weeks between April 2 and April 16, 2012. Ideal to prepare the triathlon season and for those participating in the TriStar Mallorca race the perfect way to be in perfect condition for the challenge. Some of the TriStar Ambassadors will be joining the camp.
Both TriStar111 and TriStar55.5 will take athletes on the same courses. TriStar111 participants will do two loops of each while 55.5 athletes will complete only one. The swim will take place in Portocolom’s harbour; the bike loop will take them along a rolling course including the spectacular climb of Sant Salvador, well known by thousands of triathletes and cyclists who are visiting Mallorca each year, with its 494m height and awesome views towards the island and the southeast coast. The run will take athletes from the old town along the beaches of the Portocolom bay before they cross the finish line of TriStar Mallorca.
The authentic village of Portocolom is located in the southern half of the east coast of the Balearic island of Mallorca, about 70km from Palma. The village belonging to the municipality of Felanitx is popular for not providing mass commercialisation – so those looking for water parks and endless karaoke bars will need to look elsewhere. Portocolom has the largest natural harbour of the island, and claims to be birthplace of Christopher Columbus, whose voyages led to general European awareness of the American continents.
The TriStar label is owned by Star Production SARL, a Monaco based company specializing in organizing high quality sports events that are focused on fun, social responsibility and environmental protection. The TriStar Series has grown to 28 races in these 14 destinations in less than three years: Split (Croatia), Nevis (St.Kitts and Nevis), Mallorca and Madrid (Spain), Worms-Germany (Germany), Lyon, Deauville and Cannes (France), Estonia-Otepää (Estonia), Minnesota (USA), Monaco (Monaco), Sardinia (Italy), Milton Keynes (GBR) and Salzkammergut (Austria). TriStar has introduced new distances to the sport of triathlon (A/N: 111km and 222km), officially recognized by ITU, as well as a new Team Racing Concept T5.
